On a hill called Raagi Gudda, which means Maize Mountain, sits the Hanuman Temple, drawing many worshippers from South Bangalore. The temple got its name “Ragigudda” because people believe that a large pile of ragi, a type of grain, magically turned into a stone here. Once upon a time, the Trimurtis—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva—visited this place and decided to stay permanently, transforming themselves into three big stone pillars. Goswami Tulsidas, a devoted follower of Lord Rama, oversaw the construction of the Sankat Mochan Mandir in Varanasi between 1631 and 1680. Legend has it that during his time in Kashi (Varanasi), Tulsidas had a daily ritual of pouring a glass of water on a dry tree after bathing in the Ganges. One day, as he continued this routine, a ghost emerged from the tree and offered to introduce Tulsidas to Lord Rama.
Following the ghost’s guidance, Tulsidas approached a particular patient. Sensing something special, Tulsidas humbly touched the patient’s feet and expressed his desire to meet Hanuman, who he believed resided within the person. Moved by Tulsidas’s devotion, Hanuman revealed himself to Tulsidas, manifesting in the form of soil at that spot. Inspired by this divine encounter, Tulsidas decided to construct the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple at that very location.
